This story began some 10 plus years ago and has been in the making since then. A close friend of mine, Mark (also the senior advisor), fell in love with my native town of Manado. He loved the area – the people, the food, the culture, the ocean, the mountains, and the never ending awe-inspiring natural landscapes. I live in Jakarta and rarely had or took the time to visit Manado but he would frequently return from his adventures with incredible stories and photos of his “work” trips. He worked closely with local communities and local government on infrastructure and capacity building projects and became quite the local himself. He always said he wanted to build a community based business that would bring Manado to the forefront for more than just diving; diving there is wonderful but he wanted to help empower communities by bringing their incredible fresh products made locally to the global market. His ambitition and plans were much inline with my own.
After some time, building relationships, putting all the ideas and plans together and much deliberation, we decided the best way to launch was to form Mega Coconuts as our entrance into the market place. Coconuts are in high demand and our farm is bountiful with beautiful healthy trees and our coconuts have never had any chemical fertilizers or pesticides used on them. In fact, the owner, Pak Ferry, says the farm has never had any fertilizers added other than the compost from the harvested crops.
Mega Coconuts was born from and with the mindset of a community business where we believe in transparency and traceability. We also believe that by utilizing advanced technology, training and hands-on experience we can create sustainable practices and growth for the future.
